Step 1: Get Started
Your first success is getting started in the right way. During a 45 minute session we will:
- Discuss your fitness aspirations
- Set some smart goals
- Complete a health and fitness check
This gives us everything we need to build your fitness plan.
Step 1: Get Started
First, we talk through your reasons for joining, discuss your aspirations and set some SMART goals to work towards.
Next, we’ll work together to identify any barriers that may get in the way of achieving those goal, and look at how we can help you find time to visit the centre.
Finally, we'll complete a complementary health and fitness check; including taking some key body metrics that will enable us to track your progress throughout your journey.
What are SMART goals?
SMART goals help us identify what you want to achieve, and make sure they are attainable. Here are some examples:
- Specific: I want to lose body fat
- Measurable. I want to drop down two dress/trouser sizes
- Attainable. I’d like to lose half a stone in 6 weeks
- Relevant. I want to walk-up hills without being out of breath
- Time Specific. I’d like to lose the weight before my summer holiday
Building your plan
At the end of the meeting, we’ll have everything we need to design your fitness plan. We'll book in a 45 min follow up session to run you through the plan.
In the meantime, we offer some advice on exercises you could do whilst we create your plan.
Step 2: Get Active
Next we will walk through your plan, and discuss why it supports your SMART goals. During a 45 minute session we will:
- Walk you through your fitness plan
- Show you all the gym kit you need
- Help you track your workouts
To access your fitness plan, we will show you how to access this through the Places Leisure app. You can then track each of your workouts and review your progress within the app.
Step 2: Get Active
Next, we’ll book in a short 'Get Active’ session to run through your fitness plan. Together we will:
- Walk through each part of your fitness plan
- Answer any questions you have on your plan
- Show you how to use the relevant equipment
- Set you up on the Technogym app
- Help you track your activities on the Technogym app
What to expect from your GET ACTIVE session
Having built your fitness plan, we’ll now walk through each stage of it, and explain why it matches your SMART goals we identified in our first meeting. From there we’ll head straight to the gym floor to make sure you know how to use any of the equipment you need to reach your goals.
Where can I find my fitness plan?
We’ll build your plan into the Technogym app allowing you to see you plan on the move.
The Technogym app also allows you to record any of your activity in the centre or when you are out and about giving a complete picture of your fitness.
Don’t worry – we'll show you how to find, use and track your new fitness plan on the day.

What to bring to your Get Active session
We’ll work through your fitness plan so come prepared to work out, and bring a towel and a drink.
After just 45 minutes you’ll be ready to start your new fitness plan!
Step 3: Stay Focused
For ongoing support we recommend checking in every 8 weeks to see how you are doing. During a 45 minute session we will:
- Discuss what is working and what isn't
- Look to introduce new exercises or activities
- Consider which fitness classes could help
The main goal is to keep you motivated and keep things fresh as you maintain your focus on achieving your goals.
Step 3 - Stay Focused
We’re here to support you every step of the way, and to help we recommend a scheduling a check in after 6-8 weeks.
Your review
During this time we’ll review your progress, what’s working and what isn’t and then adapt your plan to help you achieve your goals.
Taking the time to understand what’s been a success, and what’s been more of a challenge. This could include:
- Keeping things fresh by introducing new exercises
- Discussing the benefits of group exercise
- Looking at new activities that would complement your goals
Updating your plan
We’ll build any changes to your fitness plan into Active Wellness so you can get going straight away. Simple.
Elevate frequently asked questions
Do I have to complete Elevate to use the gym?
No, Elevate is not mandatory in order to use the gym as all members agree to our health statement when joining Places Leisure.
We do however recommend members take advantage of Elevate to get the most out of their membership and have a fitness plan that is aligned to their training and fitness goals.
Who is Elevate for?
For anyone who needs help identifying and working towards their fitness goals safely.
Can I do my Get Started and Get Active back to back?
Yes. We can accommodate this and it works well for people who are more experienced gym go-ers.
For people who are new to exercise its often better to separate them to give more time to reflects on goals.
