Natalie's story

From being a mum to three active boys, to being a Committee Member for Leicestershire Down’s Syndrome Group, and then teaching in a local SEN school, Natalie leads a busy life.
That hasn’t stopped her love for keeping active though, as last year she got back into playing netball after being out of the game for six years. It was unfortunately short lived though, as Natalie ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her knee.
Natalie has always been very active, and she tried her fair share of different sports growing up, such as netball, hockey, and athletics. Before having her children, she played netball four times a week and coached once a week while living in Lincolnshire. She’s also tried aerial yoga and kickboxing, and enjoys Pilates, yoga, and ballet.
She’s even set personal fitness challenges, such as 21 days of completing different/new activities, to raise money for the charity Positive about Down Syndrome.
Her main fitness goals this year are to regain a level of fitness to boost her self-confidence, self-esteem, and personal body positivity. “This in turn would all support my mental health. I used to be very active in sport before children but since having my children logistics and time is more limited to participate in the sports I used to. This means I no longer feel as healthy, fit, active, or confident as I used to.” Natalie adds.
There are many classes she would like to try too, such as our LES MILLS classes, as well as making a return to the Pilates and yoga classes. Natalie also wishes to get back into the pool: “I do enjoy swimming and have attended swimming lessons with my children and been in the pool with them during their parent and baby/toddler classes.”
Swimming makes a great choice for Natalie’s ACL recovery too. As a low impact activity, it’s gentle on the joints and a good way to reintroduce movement and build strength after an injury.
Natalie used to be a gym-goer and would lean on personal trainers to develop her progression and ease her anxiety. Getting back into the gym would also be ideal once she has had reconstructive surgery on her ACL, not just for recovery, but to get Natalie feeling like herself again!
