Jim' story

Jim's goal this year is to work on his mobility, starting with water aerobics. Jim is hoping that getting into the water will also help him lose weight.

Nearly 24 years ago, Jim was involved in a road traffic accident which left him with life changing injuries, leading him to gain weight and lose his strength. “Getting out of chairs is now twice as hard as it was, due to my lack of mobility and core strength I am also having issues with my back.” he says.

With his children studying at college and university, and his partner working six days a week, he now has some spare time to dedicate to getting fitter and stronger.

His goal this year is to work on his mobility, starting with water aerobics. Jim is hoping that getting into the water will also help him lose weight.

Low impact exercises such as water aerobics have many health benefits, such as reduced stress, improved heart health, and better muscular strength! The natural resistance of the water also provides a healthy challenge and takes the pressure off our bones, joints, and muscles.

Yoga and chair-based exercises are things that Jim wants to incorporate into his routine too, to strengthen his core and support his back.

From increasing coordination and improving posture, chair-based exercises are a great option for anybody who has reduced mobility. Yoga can help this further, by boosting flexibility, managing stress, and providing back pain relief.

Over the years, the lasting physical damage from the accident has made it harder for him to exercise, but achieving his health and fitness goals could make this year a life-changing one for Jim.

Jim’s story is a great example of how some of the key motivating factors for getting in the pool or visiting the gym go beyond losing weight, they extend to managing health conditions, improving confidence, and getting stronger.
