Ten Years of Swimming Lessons
Why the Journey is Worth It
At Tooting Leisure Centre, we take pride in the impact our swimming lessons have on children's lives. Ellie Pyemont, parent and swimming teacher at Tooting Leisure Centre, shares their incredible journey with us, celebrating 10 years of swimming lessons with their twins and the milestones they've achieved along the way.
The Early Days: Building a Foundation
"Like most families, we started swimming lessons to teach our kids an essential life skill. Those early lessons were full of little victories: blowing bubbles, learning to float, and jumping in without holding on. Watching their confidence grow in the water made every moment worth it.
What started out as a focus on water safety soon became much more. With each level passed, swimming became a hugely important part of their lives."
The Later Years: Finding Community
"Now in Level 10 with David, our twins are part of a tight-knit group of swimmers. The camaraderie in these older levels is something special. They encourage each other, share inside jokes and celebrate milestones together.
It's not just about swimming fast - it's about showing up, working hard, and having fun together. This group has given our teens a place to stay active, build friendships, and develop a love for a sport they'll carry through life.
Through the years, the twins have found more than just a sport - they've found a supportive community."
Why It Matters
"Swimming has been a constant in our family amidst all the changes of growing up - starting new schools, making new friends, and navigating life as teenagers. It's given them structure, confidence, and a sense of achievement; week after week.
For our family, swimming lessons were more than just a short-term activity. They were a long-term investment in our children's wellbeing, helping them to grow in ways that go far beyond the water."
A Journey Worth Taking
"If you're wondering whether swimming lessons are worth it, I can honestly say they are. The water offers so much - from building lifelong skills, to fostering a sense of belonging and creating memories as a family.
I'm such a fan of the programme; I even became a teacher at Tooting! Now I'm thrilled to be part of the team that helps others start their swimming journey."
At Tooting Leisure Centre, we're proud to support families through their swimming lesson journey. From building confidence in the pool, to a lifetime of loving swimming and being safe in the water.
With initiatives like free swimming for under-8s, intensive holiday lessons, and fun family swim sessions, there are opportunities for everyone to dive in, no matter their age or skill level.
