Welcome to our FAQ page regarding the upcoming essential maintenance works at Balham Leisure Centre.
Below you will find all the information you need regarding the closure of specific areas and alternative arrangements. If your question is not answered here, please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of our team.
1. What facilities will be closed during the maintenance works?
- The following areas will be closed from Monday 28th October and will reopen on Monday 23rd December:
- Pool
- Pool-side sauna and steam room
- Studio 3
- Female changing room
2. What improvements are being made?
- Wandsworth Council is investing in the replacement and upgrade of the current air handling system. These improvements will significantly enhance the air quality and temperature control in the pool hall, providing a more comfortable experience for swimmers and visitors.
3. Will fitness classes be affected?
- Fitness classes that normally take place in Studio 3 will be relocated. We will provide more details on this relocation soon.
- Other classes will continue as scheduled in Studios 1 and 2.
4. What are the arrangements for female changing room closures?
- While the female changing room is closed, we will provide an alternative space within the centre for changing. Please speak to our staff during your visit, and they will guide you to the new location.
5. What facilities will remain open during the maintenance?
- All other facilities, including the gym, squash courts, and group fitness classes in Studios 1 and 2, will remain fully operational.
6. I love using the pool. Where can I swim while the pool is closed?
- If you wish to continue swimming during the pool closure, we recommend visiting one of the following nearby leisure centres, which offer swimming facilities:
- Tooting Leisure Centre
- Latchmere Leisure Centre
- Putney Leisure Centre
- Malden Centre (Kingston-Upon-Thames)

7. How long will the works take?
- The maintenance works will begin on Monday 28th October and are expected to finish by Monday 23rd December, at which point all affected areas will reopen.
8. Why is this maintenance necessary?
- These maintenance works are essential to ensure the smooth, comfortable, and efficient operation of the centre’s facilities, improving the overall experience for all visitors.
Swimming lesson FAQs
9. What will happen to my swimming lessons during the closure?
- All swimming lessons will be temporarily suspended during the scheduled works. Direct Debit payments for swimming lessons will be collected on 24th September, after which they will be paused for November and December. Payments will resume on 24th December.
Membership FAQs
10. Will this affect my membership or fees?
- No, there will be no changes to membership fees during this time, and all other facilities at the centre will continue to operate as normal.
11. Will I still get charged during the pool closure?
- Yes, your direct debit will be collected as normal each month.
12. What facilities can I access as part of my membership during the pool closure?
- Premium members: You will still have access to the Gym and classes at Balham Leisure Centre, plus facilities at the other sites within the Wandsworth contract.
- Swim only members: You will have access to the 4 other pools within the Wandsworth contract (see question 6).
