What are the benefits?

They're kind to your joints

Low impact doesn’t mean low effort! These exercises – such as walking, swimming, cycling, and Pilates – are designed to move your body without putting too much pressure on your joints. This makes them a great option for those recovering from injury, managing conditions like arthritis, or simply looking for a gentler form of movement.

They support long-term fitness

Because low impact activities are easier to sustain over time, they’re fantastic for building consistency in your fitness routine. Activities like yoga, water aerobics, or resistance training can be part of a weekly plan that helps maintain strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health – ticking off the NHS’s recommendation of 150 minutes of activity each week.

A boost for your mind too

The slower, more controlled nature of low impact movement can do wonders for your mental wellbeing. Many people find it easier to focus on their breathing and relax into a rhythm, helping to reduce stress levels and improve mood. Whether it’s a swim, a walk outdoors, or a calm yoga session, it’s all about feeling better – inside and out.

Accessible for all ages

One of the best things about low impact exercise is that it’s suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. From grandparents to little ones, everyone can get involved in activities like family bike rides, aqua aerobics or a fun dance class together. It’s a brilliant way to make movement a shared experience.

What do I need to bring?

It depends on the activity, but most low impact exercises only require a few essentials. For example:

  • For a gym or studio class: comfortable clothing, trainers, and a water bottle.

  • For swimming: a costume, towel, and goggles if preferred.

  • For walking or cycling: weather-appropriate clothing and supportive footwear.

And of course – bring a positive mindset and a willingness to move at your own pace!
