Swimming beyond Stage 7
Sessions for advanced swimmers
Getting involved in any kind of physical activity is important for children, and as swimming is the only sport that can save your life, it’s something worth keeping up!
Along with Swim England, we strongly recommend that parents and carers keep children in swimming lessons until as a minimum, they have completed the Learn to Swim Stages 1 to 7, this means children will have achieved all of the minimum standards for water competency, should they find themselves in danger in or around water.
But this doesn’t mean that the journey has to stop after stage 7! While the availability of the below activities will vary depending on your local centre, there's still plenty of sessions for your child to get involved with beyond stage 7, to keep them challenged, motivated, and having fun in the water. Read on to find out more.

Advanced stages 8-10
After completing the learn to swim programme (stages 1-7), these classes will teach children about swimming for fitness. Take part in drills and sets to develop stamina and distance, learn how to complete turns for each competitive stroke.

Rookie Lifeguard
RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard programme teaches skills they need to be confident and enjoy water safety. The sessions are taught using colourful materials, and fun, varied lifesaving and rescue activities.

Aquatic fun & fitness
After learning to swim, aquatic fun & fitness is a relaxed session available at selected centres, that challenges and develops swimmers, taking a fun approach to fitness in the water to build strength, stamina and water safety.
With no fixed curriculum, these classes can flex to meet swimmers’ interests and skills.

Aquatic skills lessons
Selected sites offer special aquatic skills lessons, like water polo, diving, and artistic (synchronised) swimming. Learning a skilled sport like any of the above is a great way to continue your swimming journey beyond stage 7, and learn skills like discipline, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
Swimming sessions
There are many bookable swim sessions to choose from at our centres, the length of each can vary but is usually around an hour long, and you'll have the flexibility to come and go when you like within your booked slot.
Our relaxed Just Swim sessions are ideal for swimming for fun, while Lane Swimming session is a great choice for practicing technique in the pool!
Don’t forget that children enrolled on our swimming lessons programme can book these sessions for free!*
*The inclusion of free swimming with children’s swimming lessons excludes Inflatable Sessions at all centres, and Fun Sessions at Pavilions In The Park, Romsey Rapids Sports Complex, and The Triangle, and Fun for All sessions at Prudhoe Waterworld, Concordia Leisure Centre & Blyth Sports Centre.
