In My Own Words: Jaime's Journey
We speak to our mam on the move!
Jaime’s journey at Morpeth Sports and Leisure Centre began nearly two and half years ago, and she’s packed a lot into those years!
Jaime started when a desire to become healthier lead to her wanting to make a change to her lifestyle. After wanting to try for a second baby and being subjected to a lot of unsolicited health advice from others around her, she took matters into her own hands…
Initially, she became a regular at our swimming sessions and Aquafit classes, and soon after fell pregnant just like she had been hoping for! Once Jaime had given birth to her baby, she was keen to get back to the centre to try something new for her and her family.
“I read about the Mams on the Move classes and saw baby yoga was held at the centre, I gave it a try and loved it, the other mums and the instructor were lovely and very welcoming.”
Roll on a year and Jaime’s routine changed again, with the facilities on offer allowing her to adapt to her needs as well as her family’s. She’s branched out and has now added the gym to her existing swimming routine. She found getting into the swings of things at the gym daunting at first, but once Andy, a member of the fitness team, had shown her how to use some of the equipment, it made her feel more at ease.
In the last two and a half years, Jaime has lost around 12 stone (80kg) and seen both her mental and physical improve. The benefits of staying active have also been passed on to her children.
“The staff in the centre are absolutely amazing and so welcoming from the reception to the cafe, not only are we at the centre for myself but also for my children. My eldest has swimming lessons there and my youngest loves the soft play. We go swimming as family a lot and are always in and out during the holidays.”
Encouraging children to get involved in physical activity, whether they do it solo or alongside a parent or guardian, is something we enjoy seeing at our centres. It sets a great example to younger ones about what a healthy lifestyle can look like, and once a child has found an exercise they enjoy, it’s something they can take with them into adulthood.
“Take your time and change one thing at a time. It's a marathon not a sprint.” – we couldn’t agree more Jaime!
