When does a workout work for you?

When thinking about what type of class you’d like to do, consider what part of your day works best for you. Do you find you’re most energetic in the mornings or is exercise something you use to destress after a long day? Or perhaps you prefer a midday workout?

Based on this, look at your local centre’s class timetable to discover the different lengths of our classes and what times of day they occur. You can find your local centre’s timetable here or on our Places Leisure app

Finding an exercise class that you can do regularly at a time that benefits you the most, will help you commit to it and make progress in the long run. Our centres offer group exercise classes that accommodate to various schedules, whether that’s on a weekday or at the weekend, which should help you find at least one class that works for you!

What are your goals?

Next, you may want to think about what you want to get out of exercise. We all know that staying active provides benefits that go beyond the physical, and so do our classes!

If you’re looking for something that will enhance your mental wellbeing, breathe, stretch, and find your zen in one of our yoga-based classes. Focus on improving your strength and bone density in a strength training class. Or if you want to turn up the heat while giving your heart health a boost, a cardio class will help you put the work in your workout!

When choosing a class, looking at the class description via the timetable gives you an idea of what to expect in terms of the intensity of the class, what type of exercises you’ll be doing, and the duration.

If you have any existing medical conditions, these should also be taken into consideration when choosing a class.

Think about your current workout routine – mix or match it!

Looking at classes that can complement your current workout routine is another great place to start.

Maybe you already take part in our group exercise classes but you’d like to try a new style? Or perhaps you spend most of your time in the gym or pool and you’re looking for a class that will help mix things up? If you do a lot of strength training, you could try a class that’s more focused on holistic health, such as Pilates, to help increase flexibility. By mixing up your workout routine and combining different types of exercise, you can improve overall fitness, boost flexibility and strength, and prevent injury.

It could even be a good idea to match what you’re already doing. Sticking to something you know you already love doing is a recipe for success! For example, if you’d prefer to stay in the water, a pool-based class such as Aquafit could be a great option.

Choosing the best group exercise class is all about finding what works for your level of fitness, schedule, and your goals. Once you find a type of fitness that you enjoy, you’re more likely to stick with it and see results!
