Fitness over 60: Embracing an active lifestyle

Age is just a number!

Staying active is vital at any stage of life, but it becomes especially important as we age. Engaging in regular physical activity can enhance mobility, boost mental health, and improve overall well-being. At Places Leisure, our Forever Active programme is specifically designed to support older adults in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle - plus we have a wide range of other activities you can get involved in.

Why is exercise important as we age?

Regular physical activity offers numerous benefits for older adults:

  • Enhances mobility and balance: Activities like Pilates and yoga improve flexibility and stability, reducing the risk of falls.
  • Boosts mental health: Exercise releases endorphins, which can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Social inclusion: Exercise can be a great way to make new friends, grow your social circle, and try new things – all things that can become harder as we age.
  • Supports cardiovascular health: Engaging in aerobic activities strengthens the heart and improves circulation.
  • Maintains independence: Building strength through resistance training aids in daily activities, promoting self-sufficiency.

What activities are suitable for over 60s?

Our programmes offers a variety of low-impact classes tailored for older adults:

  • Pilates: Focuses on core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness.
  • Yoga: Enhances flexibility, balance, and mental clarity.
  • Aqua Aerobics: Provides a gentle, water-based workout that's easy on the joints.
  • Dance Classes: Enjoy movement and music while improving coordination and stamina.

Whether it’s walking, badminton, pickleball or the gym, these sessions are designed to be enjoyable and accessible, regardless of your current fitness level.
